Different Types of Mental Illness and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Mental disorders are becoming more common with the change in lifestyle and stress. Over 20% of the Australian population has mental illness in any given year. Alternative therapies are becoming very popular in Australia with over 68% of population trying it once.

Types of Mental Illness

The different forms of mental disorders and illness are as follows:

Anxiety has become a common mental illness. In Australia, about 26% of the adult population is affected by anxiety once in their lifetime while 14% are affected by anxiety disorders.  It is more common in women as 33% of them are likely to experience it once in their lifetime, compared to only 20% of the men who may experience it.

Stress has become a common phenomenon in today’s life. Stress is what causes a mental illness because the body needs to resolve stress. If it continues without treatment, it will manifest into a mental illness and/or physical conditions. The common symptoms of stress include weakened immune system, becoming easily agitated, low energy, headaches, body pains, insomnia etc.

Depression has become a pressing mental illness. More than 300 million people globally are suffering from depression. The symptoms of depression include being sad, feeling lonely, inability to communicate and maintain healthy relationships etc. Due to a hectic and stressful life, the occurrence of depression has become more common.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is a type of mental illness in which people indulge in repetitive and compulsive behaviors. People suffering from OCD regularly feel the urge to do things like repeatedly checking the door locks, repeatedly counting things, repeatedly washing hands etc. The exact cause of OCD is unknown but it can be the result of stress-inducing events, genetic disorders, abuses etc. About 2% of the Australian adult population suffers from OCD.

Use of EFT in Treating Mental Illness

EFT is an alternative therapy for treatment of mental illness. It is a talking therapy and body therapy where you tap on pressure points while talking about your problem. There are specific memories in the subconscious mind which trigger a mental illness. EFT sessions help to identify those memories and work towards resolving them and developing positive feelings.
